What is Dermaplaning?

When skin treatments, such as facials and microdermabrasion, are no longer giving you the outcome you desire, but you aren’t interested in lasers and more invasive procedures, you may be a candidate for dermaplaning. This exciting skin and facial treatment smoothes the surface of the skin by removing dead skin cells and fine facial hair to create a radiant, youthful complexion. Also known as dermablading, this procedure is performed with a careful scraping technique using a facial blade. Dr. Michael E. Decherd and Dr. Matthew Isakson are pleased to offer dermaplaning skin treatments at San Antonio Plastic Surgery Institute in San Antonio, TX in coordination with The Heights Med Spa. Dermaplaning is becoming more and more popular due to its ability to provide smooth, beautiful skin in a completely noninvasive manner.

Am I a Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning procedures are safe skin treatments for most skin types and tones. Those with severe acne should discuss the benefits and risks in detail before undergoing the treatment. Generally, ideal candidates for this procedure:

  • Are searching for an alternative to microdermabrasion and chemical peels
  • Don’t have rosacea
  • Have fine facial hair
  • Don’t have sensitive skin
  • Have uneven skin tone

How Is Dermaplaning Performed?

Dermaplaning treatments are typically completed on an outpatient basis in our office. Once your skin is washed, the treatment will begin with a careful skimming of the surface of the skin with a facial blade. The technician will graze the treatment area repeatedly until the needed areas have been entirely treated. The amount of time needed will vary, depending on whether a section or the full face will be addressed. During your initial consultation, Dr. Decherd and Dr. Isakson will explain the process of dermaplaning in detail.

What REsults Can I Expect From Dermaplaning?

Following your dermaplaning treatment, you can expect your face to be pink. This is a normal side effect that will subside in the coming days. It is common for some peeling to occur as the skin heals. However, it’s important not to pull it off — instead, you should allow the skin to heal on its own. Patients should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun because the skin will be very sensitive in the days and weeks following the procedure. You can expect results soon after the procedure, as dermaplaning reveals smoother, softer skin instantaneously. To help you protect your refreshed skin, the technician will outline an improved skin care regimen with you, including the highly recommended daily application of sunscreen.

Dermaplaning FAQs

How much does dermaplaning cost? The cost of your dermaplaning treatment will depend on facility fees, your unique treatment plan, the number of sessions needed to attain your goals, and if any other skin care procedure will be combined with your treatment. Once your custom plan is developed, we can estimate your costs. Our office frequently offers specials and monthly promos so be sure to ask about this during your consultation. In addition, we provide discounts when you purchase multiple treatments.

Does dermaplaning hurt? No. Typically, most patients do not experience any pain or discomfort during a dermaplaning treatment as this is a noninvasive procedure that focuses on the very top layer of skin. The purpose of the treatment is to gently scrape away old or damaged skin cells and “peach fuzz” hair for smoother, healthier skin. The results will provide a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.

Will my hair grow back thicker? No. Contrary to the popular myth that hair will grow back thicker when shaved, dermaplaning does not interfere in the natural hair production process.

How often should I get dermaplaning? We usually recommend that you receive a dermaplaning treatment once a month or every 4 – 6 weeks to maintain optimal results. Talk to your aesthetician to determine when they think it’s best for you to return for follow-up treatments.
