Overview
San Antontio men and women who suffer from puffy, droopy eyelids and bulging bags under their eyes may consider cosmetic surgery to correct their eyelids. Natural causes, such as aging, loss of volume and genetics, make men and women over the age of 35 look older and more tired. Plastic surgeon, Dr. Michael E. Decherd, performs eyelid surgery for patients who are looking for a more awakened and alert face. Also known as blepharoplasty or an eyelid tuck, Dr. Decherd uses the latest surgical technique on the upper and lower eyelids to remove excess fat and tissue, and tighten the underlying muscles to create a rejuvenated appearance.

Surgical Considerations
Eyelid surgery can improve the upper and/or lower eyelids. It is important for patients to find a skilled surgeon who can remove excess skin, fat and tissue from the eyelids while minimizing visible scarring and creating beautifully aesthetic results. During an upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made within the natural folds of the lid. For a lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made inside the lower eyelid or along the lower lash line. The surgeon will close the incision with sutures, and the scar will remain hidden in the natural creases of the eyelids.
During/After Surgery
As an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia in our surgery center, blepharoplasty can last up to 2 hours if both the upper and lower eyelids are being corrected. After surgery, the eyes and the surrounding area will be swollen and bruised. Some patients may experience mild pain; however, the surgeon will provide post-operative care instructions with directions for ice packs and medicated eye ointment. Although the recovery process can be rigorous, patients find it a small inconvenience to pay for beautiful, younger-looking results.
Eyelid Surgery FAQs
What Does It Correct?
Many patients question whether eyelid surgery can correct other facial wrinkles and sagging, such as crow's feet. An eyelid tuck removes puffy bags and excess, loose skin, which may help with crow's feet by extension. Although, if a patient's main concern is to correct crow’s feet, eyelid surgery may not be the best option. Injectable fillers, wrinkle relaxers and other facial cosmetic procedures, such as a browlift, are better at helping to eliminate crow’s feet.
Post-Operative Irritation?
Yes, some patients may experience mild irritation after surgery. If the patient experiences this side effect, the surgeon can recommend ointments and eye drops to help ease any discomfort. The surgeon also recommends patients wear dark sunglasses to protect their eyes from wind and sun irritation for the first several months after surgery.
Improves Vision?
Some men and women have impaired vision from the excess tissue and skin in their upper and lower eyelids. Those patients choose to undergo eyelid surgery to improve their vision, regain normal eyesight and achieve a rejuvenated appearance. It's important for patients to find a skilled surgeon that can perform this surgery without further damaging a patient's vision or eyes.
