Overview

Women who have completed pregnancy, or individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight, may be candidates for a body contouring procedure. For moms, this is sometimes referred to as a mommy makeover and can tighten and lift certain body parts affected by pregnancy, including the breasts, tummy and hips. Body contouring can be a single procedure (such as a breast lift) or it can be multiple procedures that take place in one surgical setting to address sagging skin and excess fat. Dr. Michael Decherd and Dr. Matthew Isakson use the latest advances in medical technology to produce outstanding aesthetic results. Following a body contouring procedure, patients are excited about their new figure, which includes a more toned and smooth appearance.

Surgical Techniques Used

Body contouring incorporates several techniques, including liposuction for fat removal, skin removal to eliminate sagging and wrinkling, and finally, a tightening technique to firm and tone the body part. Common areas addressed during body contouring are the breasts, tummy, buttocks, flanks, hips and thighs. If more than one body part is addressed during surgery, the recovery will be slightly longer for the patient. Sometimes, surgery may be staged in 2-3 settings.

Body Contouring FAQs

Body contouring is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. In most cases, patients will be released after surgery. However, many times, if a combination surgery is taking place, an overnight stay at the hospital may be required. The duration of the surgery, length of the hospital stay, and overall recovery period will depend on how many procedures were performed, as well as the overall health of the patient.

For weight loss patients, we require the individual to be at or near his or her goal weight prior to undergoing a body contouring procedure. It is also recommended that women who are having surgery to address body parts affected by pregnancy wait until all pregnancies are complete. Any additional weight gain and skin stretching can compromise the overall surgical outcome.

Unfortunately, body contouring by nature does include scars. This is because skin removal is a part of the process, and the incisions have to be made to accommodate this. We make every effort to minimize the scars by carefully placing the incisions in areas where they can be hidden by undergarments. The scars will eventually fade and blend in with the patient’s natural skin tone. We will provide scar care treatment as part of the post-operative process so that patients can tend to their scars at home.
