Tummy Tuck Explained

A tummy tuck is a plastic surgery procedure that goes beyond just removing excess skin. It’s about sculpting a flatter, firmer tummy by:

  • Tightening loose abdominal muscles: Pregnancy and weight fluctuations can weaken these muscles and stretch the surrounding fascia, contributing to a protruding belly. A tummy tuck repairs and tightens these muscles and fascia, restoring strength and definition.
  • Removing excess skin and fat: We carefully remove stubborn fat deposits and sagging skin that don’t respond to diet and exercise, revealing a smoother, more toned midsection.
  • Sculpting your waistline: We can use liposuction to further refine your waistline and enhance your overall contours, creating a harmonious and balanced silhouette.

The Procedure Process Explained

During your first meeting with the surgeon, you will have a chance to ask any questions you may have about the procedure, recovery, aftercare, and final results. Your surgeon will outline the specifics of your treatment plan while confirming your eligibility for a safe, successful procedure.

In some situations, your surgeon may direct you to pause certain medications or supplements, especially those that can contribute to bleeding or otherwise impede your body’s ability to heal.

The duration of the procedure can vary from one patient to the next depending on body habitus, but usually takes between one and a half to two and a half hours.

When you arrive, you will be greeted by members of our patient care team, who will lead you back to a private treatment area. Our on-site anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia , and once you are totally comfortable, your doctor will begin the procedure.

Following your tummy tuck procedure, you will need to rest and heal at home. Most patients are ready to resume normal work activities within a week or so, though we recommend waiting closer to a month before you get back to vigorous exercise. While some physical discomfort can be expected following a tummy tuck, pain medications are available to help you manage these symptoms. Within limits we WANT you to be moving around afterwards!

Other Things to Consider Before Getting a Tummy Tuck

Will I Need to Request a Lot of Time Off From Work?

Ideally, you will be able to devote a full week to resting and healing at home. While recovery times vary by patient and may not be excessively extensive, it is important not to rush through this rest period. For a desk job one can usualy return after one and a half weeks.

What Happens If I Get Pregnant After My Surgery?

While there is nothing dangerous about pregnancy following a tummy tuck, pregnancy and childbirth do have the potential to reverse your tummy tuck results. We generally recommend not having a tummy tuck until you are reasonably sure you are done having children.

Tummy Tuck vs. Mini-Tummy Tuck

The main difference between a tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck is in the extent of the surgical procedure and the areas of the abdomen targeted for improvement. A mini tummy tuck tends to be less extensive, targeting only the parts of the abdomen below the belly button.
